What would we do without Social Media?

Sitting here wondering how life would be different without mediums such as Facebook, Twitter, etc.    Social Media has become a way of life for us all.   M.M's "Global Village" is now reality!   What have we learned?   How have our lives changed?

#1.   Blind Dates are a thing of the past!

There is absolutely no way (with the very small exception of people who choose to skate under the "radar") for a friend to set you up with a mutual friend whom you know nothing about other than what has been presented to you.   Today, we know where he works, what his hobbies are, what his ex's look like, and how he spends his weekends.   How many people have opted not to go on such a date based on a profile picture or embarrassing weekend party shot of him wearing his underwear on his head?!?   Ok, the underwear is not acceptable behavior lol... I'm wondering, how many people have missed out on Mr. Right because his social profile seemed all wrong?

She's probably stuck in traffic....

#2.   Stalking has become an acceptable passage of time.

Do we need to know who are ex's are dating now.   Of course we do!!!   All we need is a smart phone or pc and viola!  There she is!   What we do with this information...nothing good!   We can laugh about how things turned out for him or cry because of how pretty and smart she is....Even if she makes Clifford the Big Red Dog look sexy what does that say about us?   He CHOSE her...not you.   Its bad news...all around.   Never should we be able to compare homes, cars, neighborhoods with the one that either got away or the one you threw out because he was not who you were looking for.   Now, the one you weren't looking for is the one you intentionally look for on Facebook!   Sure he's bald, overweight, and looks like hell, but does his wife really need to be driving your dream car!?!   Better to keep the past in the past and put the computer away!!!

Oh, trust me!   Its not just near...its HERE!

#3.   A mother can never again say to their graduate..."After today you will never see half these people again!"

Oh mama, how wrong you were.   Not only did you say we wouldn't see our classmates again (except for the beloved "handful we'll keep forever"..."one great friend if we're lucky") we still know them all, can name them all, and communicate with them often!   Instead of a "handful" of friends...we have hundreds.   Even some we weren't even friends with in H.S!   That's right!   The "cool" kids, the "bullies", the "quiet types", "rockers", and "smarties" are all in one big club other wise known as "the friend list"!  We grow to really care for those we despised when we were young and actually look forward to what they have to say!  Bizarre right?

#4.   We no longer keep scrapbooks but rather publish every second of our children's lives!

Tell the truth...we could practically watch our children's hair grow online!!!   Picture after picture.   Babies sleeping, eating, playing, crying, brushing their teeth...nothing is off limits for us proud parents.   Hopefully one day they won't be mortified!   Word to the wise, make hard copies, keep scrap booking alive, you never know what can happen and it would be a shame to lose all of those memories!   On the flip side, it is nice to have a backup in case our computers crash or God forbid there should be a flood or worse, fire.

 Now that is ADORABLE!!!

#5.   Employers know you better than you think they do!!!

Bought the perfect suit for that job you've been dying to interview for?   Looked impeccable head to toe right?   Impressed them?   Absolutely!   I'm sure you really WOW'd them!!!   Left them with the feeling they had finally found the perfect person for the position.   Then, the unimaginable happens...the Director of Human Relations decides to do some digging.   Remember that picture of the underwear on your head in point number 1...oh yes...that one!   She saw it.   Next applicant please!

Nice form!   But I think we're going to pass....

Be Careful Out There!!!!   Cyber Space is a Very Tricky Place....Full of Misconceptions and Misunderstandings.   Our Global Village Can be a Peaceful One...but Remember, Its a Jungle Out there!!!
